AbstractAbstract
[en] Deeply bound states in pionic lead were observed using the 208Pb(d,3He)π-x207Pb reaction in recoilless kinematics at 600 MeV deuteron energy. The binding energies of the π- in the 2p and 1s state in 207Pb were determined from the measured 3He momentum spectrum at 0 deg. to be Bπ(2p)=(5.28 ± 0.11) MeV and Bπ(1s)=(7.04 ± 0.32) MeV respectively. From these binding energies an effective pion mass meffπ∼160 MeV at ρ=ρ(0) and ρn/ρp=1.6 was deduced
