AbstractAbstract
[en] Varying concentrations (5-30 vol.%) of metallic copper nanoparticles (80-120 nm diameter) and microparticles (3.25-4.5 mm) were incorporated into a methylmethacrylate (MMA) matrix. Reinforcement of the polymerization of the composite was carried out using a dose of de 8 kGy of gamma radiation applied in situ. All samples obtained exhibited good workability properties. The morphology of the samples with different concentrations of the metallic filler phase was studied using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, indicating that the filler was homogeneously distributed in the matrix and that the radiation treatment did not alter the metallic phase. Room temperature electrical resistance measurements also indicated that the samples be highly homogeneous with a linear resistivity as a function of the distance between electrodes. The percolation threshold of the composite system was found to be ≅10 vol.% Cu with resistivities in the 12 a 42 Ωm range for nanoparticles and microparticles, respectively. The electrical resistivity was also dependent on the particle size of the filler material. Gamma radiation was found to be an effective technique for fabricating conducting polymeric matrix composites that had a homogeneous metal filler distribution and were resistant to mechanical action with high workability properties (author)
