AbstractAbstract
[en] This report presents a market overview of the electrical power equipment and services in Vietnam and describes the potential for Canadian suppliers to enter into joint ventures to establish local production facilities and transfer technology expertise. The demand for electric power in Vietnam has increased due to economic expansion and industrialization. Demand is expected to grow at a rate of 10 to 15 per cent per year through 2010. Electrical equipment represents 75 per cent of the total value of Vietnam's power generation market. The government's economic plan is to raise per-capita electricity output, increase total power output capacities, and expand the national electricity grid to 85 per cent coverage in 2005 and 100 per cent by 2010. This report describes the key factors shaping market growth with particular reference to sector reform, and opportunities with actual and planned projects. Opportunities for Canadian companies lie in project consulting and the supply of machinery and equipment. Other opportunities lie in the rehabilitation of a hydroelectric dam, rural electrification and high-voltage transmission. The competitive environment was also discussed with reference to local capabilities, international competition, Canadian position, and a competitive advantage through Canadian government policies and initiatives. A section of the report on public-sector customers described the several organizations that manage and approve electric power generation and transmission projects. Considerations for market-entry in Vietnam were outlined. 44 refs., 6 tabs
