AbstractAbstract
[en] Certain materials intended for use as a protection against gaseous tritium and tritiated water are classified. Active tests are discussed and an account is given of phenomena encountered with very small quantities of the element. Tests carried out using helium and inactive water are reported, the materials that were tested are the following: Perbunan and butyl rubber, Scaphair, polyethylene, nylon, PVC and neoprene. Gaseous tritium was used without a carrier and, for safety reasons, it was not possible to handle it in weighable amounts. One mCi of tritium corresponds to 10-7 g of this gas. At a concentration of one mCi/m3 one has therefore 10-7 g/m3 of tritium. Under the same conditions, at normal pressure, a cubic meter of hydrogen weighs 900 g. The amounts handled during the active tests are thus 1010 times less than those which would have been used in the case of hydrogen at normal pressure. We have to notice the different behaviour of gaseous tritium and tritiated water: polyethylene is more permeable to gaseous tritium than PVC, for tritiated water it is exactly the opposite
