AbstractAbstract
[en] The report presents the current status of the investigations on the site selection for low and intermediate level (LILW) and high level (HLW) radioactive waste from the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Bulgaria. Several projects concerning different geological aspects of site selection were fulfilled after 2000. The centralized approach has been applied to the site selection. The preliminary number of a few ten of potential sites has been reduced to 3 - 4 for LILW repository and 5-6 for geological disposal of HLW. It is presented a short description of the main characteristics of the sites. Three of the most prospective sites for LILW repository are located in the vicinity of Kozloduy: two sites are situated in the Kozloduy NPP area and one - in the Marichin valog tributary value 2.5 km southwest of the NPP. This site is most investigated and it presents many advantages - thick zone of aeration, impermeable soil base of Pliocene clay, etc. The potential sites for deep geological disposal of HLW are located in the Lower Cretaceuos marls in North Bulgaria (three sites), in the Tertiary clays in the area of Kozloduy NPP (one site) and in the Sakar granite pluton - in the southeastern part of the country (two sites). Two of the marl sites are at a distance of about 55-58 km to the south of the Kozloduy NPP and one - close to the Belene NPP. The lithology, stratigraphy, tectonics, hydrology, geomorphology and other geological characteristics of the potential sites are briefly described. With this study the stage of the regional investigations of the site selection process has been completed. The tasks of the next stage of site characterization are discussed in the report. The main conclusion is that notwithstanding the relatively small territory and the complex geological settings, prospective sites for RAW disposal can be found in Bulgaria
