AbstractAbstract
[en] The corrosion behaviors of six Al-alloys (1100Al, 6061Al, 6063Al, SZAV-1Al, 305Al, LT24Al) and two stainless steels assembled in four racks and immersed in the research reactor storage basin, respectively, for 349, 772, 904 and 1374 days are studied. The basin water chemistry and radioactivity are periodically analyzed. The visual and amplified inspection, photographic record and metallographic analyses are carried out to characterized the immersed coupons/racks. The results reveal that the degree of corrosion attack has such an order: 6063Al > 6061Al > 1100Al, upper coupons > under coupons. The pH value of the water inside crevice couples is ∼1 pH unit lower than the pH value of the bulk water, which may promote the dissolution of the aluminum oxide film and enhance the aluminum corrosion. The particles on coupons surfaces would contribute to pit initiation. The basin water quality plays an essential role to prevent from Al-clad corrosion. It proved maintaining high quality water chemistry is the most important factor in controlling Al-clad corrosion for wet storage of research reactor spent fuel
