AbstractAbstract
[en] The safety research on the high-level radioactive waste has been conducted by domestic research institutes in order to contribute to the safety standard and guideline determined by safety authority. In the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, it has been conducted aggressively since the previous organization (Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation, Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute, and Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute), and the achieved results has been reflected to the documents related to the decision of a basic idea of the safety regulation for disposal of the high-level radioactive waste etc. The high-level radioactive waste disposal is in the implementation stage, and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan was established as an implementation body in 2000. The voluntary approach to select preliminary investigation area has been initiated in 2002, and the repository operation will be started between 2030's and middle of 2040's. As mentioned above, the regulatory and implementation activities have been progressed in parallel, and the basic research and development should contribute to these activities. The Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC) and Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC), have developed the geological disposal technology of the high-level radioactive waste to contribute the implementation of disposal and the safety regulation. This report describe the outline of the safety research conducted up to now: the policy and the plan of the safety research on the high-level radioactive waste disposal, the summary of results, and future studies required.
