AbstractAbstract
[en] A possibility of application of a high-power first-overtone CO laser as a potential driver for beamed energy propulsion is discussed. The laser can operate within wavelength range ∼3.3-4.0 μm corresponding to the atmospheric transparency window. The laser efficiency was recently experimentally demonstrated to reach 16%, with theoretically predicted one being higher than 20%. A brief introduction into the first-overtone CO laser physics and information on progress in the R and D of such lasers are presented
