AbstractAbstract
[en] The AB5 type of intermetallic compounds are well known for their hydrogen absorption properties. LaNi5 is one of the extensively studied systems with a storage capacity of 1.5 wt%. The hydrogen storage capacity, plateau pressure and the kinetics of absorption of this material can be tailored by suitable substitution at La/Ni sites. It is reported that the hydrogen absorption capacity of this alloy can be enhanced by the substitution of elements having higher electron attractive power and bigger size than that of Ni. For example, substitution of Fe for Ni is found to be effective in the enhancement of the storage capacity of LaNi4Fe to 2.2 wt%. Here, the effect of substitution of Ni in LaNi5 compound with a combination of two elements-(i) Zr and Fe, and (ii) V and Fe are reported. Hydrogen absorption properties of LaNi4Zr0.5Fe0.5 and LaNi4V0.2Fe0.8 alloys have been investigated. These alloys have been prepared by arc melting technique under argon atmosphere. The alloys have been analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The alloys are found to form in hexagonal structure. Hydrogen absorption studies and kinetics have been carried out using a Sieverts set-up and the pressure composition isotherms are studied at room temperature
