AbstractAbstract
[en] There is evidence to indicate that water may have flooded the void spaces inside the aluminum cladding which surrounds the graphite reflector at the Oregon State University TRIGA reactor (OSTR). This paper presents and discusses this evidence, as well as data from a number of experiments which were performed in an attempt to confirm whether or not flooding actually has occurred. The safety implications of a flooded reflector are presented and shown to be of little concern based in part on the OSTR's history of high water purity in the reactor tank. It is concluded that the sole concern is a reduction in the usefulness of certain beam ports. Proposed methods of surveillance to detect corrosion of the reflector cladding are also briefly discussed. (author)
