AbstractAbstract
[en] We measured the Gamow-Teller (GT) strength of the neutron-rich nucleus "8He, which has the largest neutron-to-proton ratio among all known particle-stable nuclei. We performed the first measurement of the "8He(p, n)"8Li reaction at 190A MeV in inverse kinematics at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The double differential cross sections at excitation energies up to E_x ∼ 20 MeV were obtained, and two peaks were observed at ∼1 and ∼8 MeV in the spectrum. We obtained the GT strength of B(GT) = 8 ± 4 for the neutron decay channel of the 8-MeV state. The result suggests that most of the GT strength is concentrated in the resonance state at ∼8 MeV. This is the first direct observation of the GT giant resonance in "8He. (author)
