AbstractAbstract
[en] The carbide fuel for FBTR is fabricated in Radiometallurgy Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre by powder metallurgical route. The feed materials are PuO_2, UO_2 and graphite powders. These powders are characterised for various parameters before use to ensure desired quality of final product. Specific Surface Area (SSA) is one of the important parameters which affect the sintering behaviour of the powders. The SSA is determined by single point BET method. The sample is kept in He+30% N_2 flow. Then sample cell is immersed in liquid Nitrogen bath. The amount of Nitrogen adsorbed on the sample surface is determined by thermal conductivity method. By putting this value in BET equation surface area of the sample is calculated. Plutonium is well-known for its radio toxicity and always handled in leak tight glove boxes. It is mandatory to test the glove box for various safety features before Plutonium handling. The glove box is kept under negative pressure of 1 inch (water gauge) to avoid release of Plutonium from the glove box. In RMD, an indigenous surface area analyser is installed in a glove box (1m x 1m x 1m size) which was tested for its performance by analysing different inactive samples. The surface area measurement requires handling of liquid Nitrogen in glove box condition for analysing Pu based samples
