AbstractAbstract
[en] MOX fuel fabrication makes an important part of the second stage of the Indian three stage nuclear power program. Presently MOX fuel fabrication is done via Powder oxide Pelletization (POP) route which involves mixing of UO_2 and PuO_2 powders, milling, pre-compaction, granulation, final compaction and sintering. This rote has scope of high contamination spread due to handling of PuO_2 powders right from the first step of the fabrication line. In an attempt to overcome the issue of powder handling of high radioactive material Impregnated Agglomerate Pelletization (IAP) process is being investigated where PuO_2 powders is converted to solution to be coated on much less radioactive UO_2 spheroids. The goal of the technique is to develop IAP technique for (U,Pu)O_2 based MOX fuel pellet fabrication which involves milling, extrusion and spherodization of UO_2 powder in an unshielded facility and then coating it with desired amount of PuO_2 using Pu bearing nitrate solution in a shielded facility. Then final compaction and sintering is done. The pellets obtained were characterized using density measurement, WDXRF, optical microscopy and XRD analysis and results obtained were compared with those of POP route. The work was simulated with CeO_2 as surrogate material of PuO_2 as Ce and Pu have similar physical and chemical properties. The technique can be of major importance for fuel fabrication from reprocessed fuel of fast breeder reactor which will contain very high amount of highly radioactive plutonium and fission products.
