AbstractAbstract
[en] A medically useful "8"9Sr is produced via "8"9Y (n, p) "8"9Sr in FBTR, Kalpakkam. The flow sheet was standardized to obtain "8"9Sr source from irradiated yttria using either by TBP extraction followed by ion exchange chromatography or Sr-specific crown ether 4, 4′, (5′)-di (t-butylcyclohexano)- 18-crown-6 (DtBuCH_1_8C_6). However supported liquid membrane (SLM) technique offers many additional advantages and is being standardized presently. A PTFE membrane loaded with the crown ether was sandwiched between feed (Sr tracer with or without matrix in nitric acid) and strip (distilled water) chambers with stirring arrangements. The transport of Sr from feed to strip chamber was studied as a function of various parameters using the tracers "8"9Sr and "8"8Y which were assayed by gamma spectrometry using HPGe detector. Sr transport increased with i) stirring speed saturating at 150RPM and ii) pore size (0.45 - 1.2 μm). It remained unchanged for increasing the crown ether (0.01 to 0.1M) but reduced for >0.5M. Addition of Y carrier relatively increased Sr transport considerably and Y marginally compared to the presence of carrier free "8"8Y tracer under identical conditions. Addition of complexing agent 0.01M EDTA (pH: 2) to Sr/Y in the feed chamber caused no transport of Sr/Y but addition of salting out agencies NaNO_3 and Al(NO_3)_3 to it caused enhanced and suppressed separation factor respectively. Acidity compensation in the feed chamber and periodical replacement of distilled water in the strip chamber enhanced transport efficiency due to making up of the possible H"+ transportation across the membrane.
