AbstractAbstract
[en] Ingot and powder of U-7Mo-xTi have been fabricated as an alternative fuel of dispersion type. The synthesis of alloy was conducted by electric arc melting, while powder fabrication was carried out by hydride-dehydride method at a given temperature and pressure. The addition of 1, 2 and 3% of Ti can effect the microstructure and mechanical properties. The ingot of U-7Mo-xTi was further tested and examined for the microstructure and mechanical properties. The ingot and powder of U-7Mo-xTi were examined using SEM to observe the microstructure and morphology of the powder such as shape, size and distribution. Microstructure observation indicates that grain size decrease with the addition of Ti. The addition of 3% of Ti produces the smallest grain structure. The hardness of the alloy increases with increasing Ti content. The hardness values of U-7Mo, U-7Mo-1Ti, U-7Mo-2Ti, and U-7Mo-3Ti alloys are 240.4, 300.6, 324.4, and 340.2 HVN respectively. SEM examination of the powder shows brittle fracture due to hydrogen absorption. Powder size varies from less then 10 μm to over 100 μm. The shape of powder is relatively rounded and regular. Some microcracks were identified on the coarse grains, so in the next stage, the mechanical milling, the sample was easily fragmented into powder with smaller size. (author)
