AbstractAbstract
[en] Introduction: The containment of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is the last barrier for the release of radioactive substances to the environment. The “Status Report on Filtered Containment Venting” [1] states the following: In case of a Severe Accident the containment can be pressurized with a pressure exceeding its failure pressure. In order to keep the containment intact de-pressurization should be possible. To protect the environment against contamination with fission products filtration of the released gas is recommended. Filtered containment venting (FCV) is an additional option to protect the containment and the facility while mitigating radioactivity releases to the environment. The Fukushima Daiichi NPP’s accident demonstrated that in the absence of alternatives to reduce the containment pressure build-up due to steam and incondensable gas accumulation during an accident, the venting of the containment becomes an essential accident management measure for the preservation of its structural integrity...
