AbstractAbstract
[en] In 2000 the German SPD-Green coalition government led by Gerhard Schroeder decided a progressive nuclear phase-out policy that was challenged a few years later, but the Fukushima accident killed any future for nuclear energy in Germany. The Biblis nuclear power plant (operated by RWE) was decommissioned in 2011. This decision was taken abruptly after the Fukushima accident while the possibility of life extension of the plant was considered by German authorities. The deconstruction of the Biblis plant is expected to be allowed by the federal government in 2016. Anti-nuclear organizations and more than 1000 people have expressed their opposition to the deconstruction operations during public hearings, which has slowed down the process considerably. The deconstruction phase will last about 15 years and the plant will have to comply with nuclear regulations as long as nuclear fuel is not removed which implies heavy constraints in terms of reactor monitoring and maintenance, safety, radiation protection,....369 employees are still working on the site at the end of 2015.
