AbstractAbstract
[en] The Mobile Hot Cell (MHC) radiation shielded wall is usually made of river sand. River sand was successfully used as the radiation shielding wall for MHCs in South Africa and China. This is due to the mobile characteristics of the MHC wherein river sand is easily available anywhere so that it can be procured nearby in the locality of MHC and easy to transport. In this study, river sands from Kajang and Gombak were selected to assess their suitability as radiation shielding wall. Two types of river sand were used i.e. coarse and fine river sands. Densities of the sands are found to vary between 1.5 g / cm"3 to 1.8 g / cm"3. The radiation shielding experiments using gamma spectrometry were carried out to determine the linear attenuation coefficient of each sand samples with Cs-137 used as radiation source. The findings from this study will be used as a guideline in selecting suitable river sand for MHC applications. (author)
