AbstractAbstract
[en] In the present work, a novel tripodal diglycolamide extractant with three DGA arms tethered to a 9-membered macrocycle ring named as triaza-cyclononane-tripodal DGA or TCN-TDGA was synthesized and evaluated for the extraction of actinide (Pu4+, UO22+, Am3+) and lanthanide (Eu3+) ions from HNO3 solutions. The order of extraction was found to be Eu3+>Pu4+>Am3+>>UO22+ at 3 M HNO3. A solution containing 1.0x10-3 M ligand in a mixture of 5% iso-decanol + 95% n-dodecane resulted in a very high extraction of Eu3+ and Am3+, the D values being 94.5 and 40.7, respectively from 3 M HNO3. The extraction profiles of both the metal ions as a function of HNO3 concentrations conformed to a solvation mechanism. The ligand concentration variation studies suggested extracted species of the type, ML2. The nature of the complex was also investigated by emission spectroscopy using the Eu3+ complex in MeOH which suggested species with one inner-sphere water molecule. DFT calculations suggested that the higher extraction of Eu3+ as compared to that of Am3+ was due to the bonding through only the DGA arms and not involvement of the ‘N’ atoms of the aza-crown ring
