AbstractAbstract
[en] Magnetism at nano-scale not only offers intriguing physics but also it is critical in many applications such as magnetic memory and bio-medicine. The most suitable technique to probe the magnetic properties of an individual magnetic nano-structure is µ-SQUID or a conventional SQUID with a micron size pick-up loop. The former has been used to probe a few selected magnetic nanosystems while many others are yet to be explored. An essential part of this μ-SQUID magnetometer is a 3D vector magnet for selectively applying the magnetic field relative to the SQUID plane and also for probing the anisotropic magnetic properties of the nano-structure. We have made a small size vector electro-magnet with superconducting NbTi wire giving a maximum field of 20mT in each direction and successfully used it for probing the magnetism of permalloy thin film ellipses of micron and sub-micron sizes. We are currently making another vector magnet with a maximum field of 0.4 T in xy-plane and 1.2 T in z-direction. This will be used with a homemade liquid helium cryostat capable of 1.5K temperature. Another more space-economical design for 3D vector magnet with field exceeding 1 T in each direction has been worked out. Design aspects of the new magnet are also presented here. (author)
