AbstractAbstract
[en] Medical Cyclotrons are used for the production of SPECT isotopes like 67Ga, 201Tl and short lived PET isotope like 18F. These cyclotrons are generally of medium energy proton accelerators with a beam current of the order of 200-500 μA. Generally H- ions are accelerated and beam is stripped at the extraction radius which increases the extraction efficiency to 99%. Since the beam current is high, the loss of beam current at target facility is more which in turn generates a reasonable amount of waste. These types of accelerators are to be housed in public domain because of their requirements. DAE Medical cyclotron at Kolkata is a 30 MeV proton accelerator with 350 μA guaranteed beam current. The radioactive waste is generated while irradiating the solid target assembly and during their chemical processing in hotcells for the synthesis of the radiopharmaceuticals of these SPECT isotopes. Estimation of waste generated as well as proper planning to handle radioactive waste is required to reduce the dose received by the radiation workers and to minimize spread of contamination. The management of different liquid and solid active waste generated is described considering radiological safety aspects. The dose rate to the workers from the processing of irradiated solid target have been estimated and mitigation plan is discussed. (author)
