AbstractAbstract
[en] Full text: Aluminum-Nickel alloys have great importance for aerospace industry due the mechanical strength, hardness, corrosion resistance and relatively low density. This research aims to determine the effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the compact Al-3Ni (% weight) alloy ingots produced by the following process: selection of Al-3Ni powder with particle size between 106μm and 180μm (produced by air atomization), uniaxial compaction of the metal powder and hot consolidation by extrusion at temperatures of 400°C and 350°C, both with the same speed extrusion of 5mm/min and extrusion ratio of 10/1. The mechanical properties were obtained by Vickers microhardness tests and the ingots were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the XRD analysis were identified diffraction peaks relating to the Al-alpha phase and to Al3Ni precipitates for both consolidated ingots. The MEV analysis shows a homogeneous distribution of the Al3Ni precipitates, but mostly around the grain boundaries of the Al-alpha matrix. In general, the Al3Ni particles size was in the most part of 0.2 um to 2 um.The resultant Vickers hardness of the ingots consolidated at 400°C and 350°C was 59.9 ± 7.47 HV0.3 and 72.61 ± 6.53 HV0.3 respectively. This result indicates the promotion of a softening effect by the higher temperature used for the Al-3Ni powder consolidation, possibly due to a induced higher grain growth of the Al-alpha phase and an eventual lower anchoring effect to dislocation motion promoted by coarse Al-3Ni particles.
