[en] The EPR-2 is an optimized version of the EPR reactor. EPR-2 has many similitudes with the EPR: the same power output (1670 MWe), an operating life of at least 60 years,.... but its constructibility has been improved. The double-walled containment building has been replaced by a containment building made of a very thick wall coated by a metallic liner. As the EPR was originally a Franco-German project some features were demanded by the German side but not used in the French reactor fleet, for instance the possibility of performing maintenance activities in the reactor building while the reactor is operating at full power. The abandonment of this possibility has simplified the building design. The EPR-2 has been made more modular and it uses more prefabricated elements than the EPR which is expected to accelerate its construction and to simplify the organization of the work-site. Naturally the EPR-2 is fully benefiting from the feedback experiences of the EPR construction sites in France, Finland, China and England. (A.C.)
