AbstractAbstract
[en] High-quality TRISO (SiC)-coated fuel can be produced (however, Germany has no production facility at present, and the US and Japan have had no large scale demonstration of high-quality fuel performance to date). The available high-quality TRISO (SIC) fuels have not been rigorously tested under gas-turbine conditions, but appear satisfactory under moderate conditions (reactor outlet temperature of 850 °C, time-average fuel temperature under operating conditions < 1200 °C). If fission product retention is not sufficient, an option is to increase the thickness of the SIC layer. TRSO (ZrC)-coated particles show interesting fission-product-retention properties, but full development of such fuels will require a long and significant development program. (author)
