[en] This paper addresses how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has performed final status surveys (FSS) at sites with subsurface contaminated areas. The Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) guidance addresses only surficial contamination. This paper will explore alternative methodologies used by the USACE to demonstrate compliance with the release criterion when contamination extends below the surface. Special challenges posed by small areas of elevated activity at depth will also be addressed. (authors)
