AbstractAbstract
[en] Packaging is an essential component for the food system which ensures the safe handling and delivery of fresh and processed food products from the production stage to the end user stage. The technological advances in packaging offer new perspective to reduce losses, maintain quality, add value and extend shelf- life of agricultural produce and as a result secure the food system. We can thus very well relate to the importance of packaging in food science and technology. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a large band gap semiconductor widely used as a photocatalytic disinfecting material for surface coatings.TiO2 has been approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in human food and compounded in food contact materials. Polyethylene (PE) is a widely used polymeric materials for packaging applications owing to its barrier properties, higher strength and elongation, lower cost and lightness In this work we have synthesized nano TiO2 using sol-gel method. The nanostructure was established using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). TiO2 composites with PE were produced using twin screw extruder. The nanocomposites were characterized using X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Surface scanning microscopy (SEM). (author)
