AbstractAbstract
[en] This note addresses the case of metropolitan France and of onshore wind energy, and does not aim at putting the existing wind energy installations into question again, but at justifying the refusal of new developments. The authors first state that nothing requires any additional wind energy installation as France does not need it to cover its electric power consumption, that a new development would not have any effect on climate, that a further development of wind energy would not actually reduce the French energy dependency, that the replacement of a part of nuclear reactors by wind turbines would be without any impact on domestic security, and that France is already ahead of time and not late in wind energy development. The authors then outline how much wind energy is severely handicapped by its intermittency, and that an important additional wind energy development would have an extremely high cost (investments, other financial burdens, choices made often in favour of photovoltaic projects). They state that a further development of wind energy would be a disaster for the living conditions of French people (effects on landscape, on the housing market, on tourism, on biodiversity). As solutions, the authors evoke the major refit of nuclear reactors, the development of thermal solar energy and of other renewable energies, while stopping the development of wind energy installations, and defining stronger restrictions for these installations
