[en] This synthesis of a workshop more particularly outlines and discusses the crucial role of solar pumping for the development of drinkable water services in a rural environment, proposes a brief overview of the main arguments in favour of solar pumping (comparison between thermal and solar solutions), indicates the major related technological advances (power, extraction of underground water, hybrid pumps, dimensioning software), outlines the contextual differences between Mali, Mauritania and Senegal, highlights opportunity criteria of the solar option depending on community size, proposes an assessment of costs, discusses the recurring problem of equipment quality, presents optimisation as a solution to reduce energy costs whatever the used source is. It formulates challenges and recommendations regarding the quality of solar equipment and of installations, maintenance and follow-up, technology and skills transfer, water and energy storage
