AbstractAbstract
[en] The giant-resonance region was studied for 40Ca, 40Ar, 36Ar, 32S, 28Si, 27Al, 20Ne, and 16O by inelastic scattering of 96.6-MeV α particles. A systematic broadening of the isoscalar giant resonance at E/sub exc/approx. =63/A/sup 1/3/ MeV occurs as A decreases. The width for 40Ca is 3.5plus-or-minus0.3 MeV, for 32S it is 7.1plus-or-minus0.5 MeV, and for nuclei below A=32 the resonance is too diffuse to be observed
