AbstractAbstract
[en] Recent in-beam experiments with heavy ions leading to mass measurements and spectroscopic studies of light nuclei very far from the region of beta stability are reviewed. The detection of resonance particles as low-yield reaction products is discussed first. Heavy-ion reactions producing multineutron final states are then taken up. Energy spectra are shown for the 7Li(7Li,11B)T, 7Li(7Li,11C)3n, and 7Li(7Li,10C)4n reactions at 79.6 MeV. Several excited states were seen in the (7Li,11B) reaction, but no structure was visible in the (7Li,11C) reaction. Upper limits for the production of trineutrons and tetraneutrons in these experiments were 70 and 30 nb, respectively. Other multinucleon transfer reactions are then considered, with emphasis on two-proton-pickup reactions and exotic rearrangement reactions. Energy spectra are shown for the following reactions: 48Ca(6Li,8B)46Ar at 80 MeV; (6Li,8B) on 11B, 9Be, and 12C at 80 MeV; (11B,8B) on 26Mg and 28Si at 86 MeV; 26Mg(α,8He)22Mg at 110 MeV; (α,8He) on 12C and 24Mg at 156 MeV; 14C(18O,12Be)20Ne at 88.7 MeV; 26Mg(7Li,8B)25Ne at 78.9 MeV; and 9Be(9Be,8B)10Li at 120 MeV. Finally, predictions made by using the shell model and the relations of Garvey et al. are compared with measured masses for T/sub Z/= 5/2 nuclei in the 2s--1d shell. (19 figures) (U.S.)
