AbstractAbstract
[en] When considering the environmental impact of nuclear power it is necessary to regard nuclear power in relation to the other sources of primary energy, even if every individual source of energy must produce only a minimum impact on the environment. In a comparison of the problems affecting all sources of energy in the same or a modified way and of the specific problems attached to the individual sources of energy, nuclear power even now comes out quite well. The generation of secondary energy by means of nuclear fission gives rise to a lower environmental burden than does generation by fossil fired power stations. However, the growth rate of electricity generation as a whole should be slowed down and the use of waste heat should be improved. The problem of heat losses is the key problem in environmental pollution in the decades to come. Nuclear power is very flexible in terms of siting. The emission of pollutants from nuclear power stations is much less severe than it is in comparable branches of industry. More attention must be devoted to the reduction of the radiation exposure of the personnel employed in nuclear plants by improving the conditions of maintenance and repair. Problems arising in connection with decommissioning should also be included in future planning. (orig.)
