AbstractAbstract
[en] A new two-dimensional kinetics code in hexagonal geometry has been developed that utilizes the response matrix approach to neutron transport theory. Based on the static code RASCAL, TRASCAL incorporates an explicit treatment of delayed neutron precursors. This permits the approximation of transient response matrices in terms of the more readily calculated static matrices, a major computational advantage. TRASCAL has been coded to permit the use of multiple spatial and angular modes, which have been found useful in RASCAL. The response of reactors to abrupt changes in νΣ/sub f/ at t = 0 has been analyzed by both TRASCAL and the diffusion theory code TRIMHX. Both analyses agree very well for problems in which transport effects are insignificant. Where transport effects are important, the results differ accordingly. 10 references. (U.S.)
