AbstractAbstract
[en] The reactions of peroxy radicals produced from 2-propanol and from methanol were investigated. At pH3 the peroxy radicals were found to decay by both second- and first-order processes: O2CH2OH → HO2 + CH2O, k approximately equal to 5 x 102s-1; O2COH(CH3)2 → HO2 + (CH3)2CO, k = (700 +- 150)s-1; 2O2CH2OH → products, 2k = (3 +- 1) x 108 M-1 s-1; 2O2COH(CH3)2 → products, 2k = (1.1 +- 0.2) x 107 M-1 s-1. The reactivity of O2C(OH) (CH3)2 toward OH- and HPO42- ions, resulting in the ionization of the peroxy radicals, and the subsequent formation of O2-, was studied. A rate constant k/sub ((CH3)2C(OH)(O2)+OH-→(CH3)2C(O-)(O2)+H2O)/ = (5.2 +- 1) x 109 M-1 s-1 was measured. The similar reaction with HPO42- was found to have a rate constant of (1.07 +- 0.15) x 107 M-1 s-1. All results were reported for an ionic strength of 0.1 M
