AbstractAbstract
[en] Various questions are raised about the policy underlying the UK nuclear power programme, particularly in relation to other sources of energy such as coal, oil and gas. It is stated that costs, time scale and development stages have always been under-estimated, and that forecasts of the demand for electricity have fluctuated. Decisions have to be taken on the SGHWR programme and on the fast breeder reactor. Investment decisions have also to be taken, on uranium exploitation or exploration and on the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. The development of nuclear power should be approached in a realistic and hard-headed way, assessing its industrial viability and considering whether the UK should proceed alone or as part of an international consortium.
