AbstractAbstract
[en] An analytical review is given of studies made into the giant multipole resonances (GMR) in nuclei by means of inelastic scattering of electrons, protons, helium-3 and alpha-particles. Investigated nuclei from 12C to 238U have been tabulated, indicating the isotope under study, the particle and its initial energy, the resonance energy and the transition. The following conclusions have been drawn. 1. In all the nuclei investi.oated a resonance is excited at the energy of about 63 Asup(-1/3) MeV, that is 2 or 3 MeV below the energy of the well-known giant dipole resonance (GDR). It has been shown that in some nuclei this resonance has a fine structure. 2. In many experiments evidence has been obtained for the existence of resonances above GDR at energies of about 120 to 130 Asup(-1/3) MeV. 3. Evidence has been presented for the existence in some nuclei of the magnetic dipole and electric octupole resonances as well. 4. The theoretical predictions of the GMR still have a qualitative character
