[en] The separation of on-shell and off-shell effects is a subtle process which in general cannot be carried out unambiguously and model-independently. It would, therefore, be of great value to find a circumstance in which the on-shell contribution is in general non-zero, in which case the latter could be determined unambiguously and model-independently. Such a circumstance exists for certain types of polarization quantities; for example, in pion--nucleon bremsstrahlung
