AbstractAbstract
[en] The presentation will concentrate on recent applications with exciting results of Penning traps in atomic and nuclear physics with cooled and stored exotic ions. These are high-accuracy mass measurements of short-lived radionuclides, g-factor determinations of the bound-electron in highly-charged, hydrogen-like ions and g-factor measurements of the proton and antiproton. The experiments are dedicated, e.g., to astrophysics studies and to tests of fundamental symmetries in the case of mass measurements on radionuclides, and to the determination of fundamental constants and a CPT test in the case of the g-factor measurements.(author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure have been measured in the 4f7 5d6s2 9D6 - X9 D6 (;38 024. 9 cm-1) transition in atomic gadolinium using high-resolution resonance ionization mass spectroscopy. Excitation was performed as a resonance-enhanced two-photon transition with the 4f7 5d6s6p 9F7 state as an intermediate level. Selective population of hyperfine states in the first excitation step allowed assignment of all transitions in the complex hyperfine spectrum of the odd isotopes 155,157Gd and evaluation of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine structure constants for the X 9D6 state. Measured values for the isotope shifts of all stable Gd isotopes have been used to derive specific mass shift and field shift factors. The obtained spectroscopic information leads to the conclusion that the X 9D6 state is a 4f75d6s8s configuration

AbstractAbstract
[en] The highest precision in mass measurements on short-lived radionuclides is obtained using trapping and cooling techniques. Here, the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI/Darmstadt and the tandem Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN play an important role. Status and recent results on mass measurements of radioactive nuclides with ESR and ISOLTRAP are summarized

AbstractAbstract
[en] The autoionization (AI) spectrum of gadolinium between the first and second limits has been investigated by triple-resonance excitation with high-resolution cw lasers. A large number of narrow AI resonances have been observed and assigned total angular momentum J values. The resonances are further divided into members of AI Rydberg series converging to the second limit or other 'interloping' levels. Fine structure in the Rydberg series has been identified and interpreted in terms of Jcj coupling. A number of detailed studies have been performed on the interloping resonances: these include lifetime determination by line-shape analysis, isotope shifts, hyperfine structure, and photoionization saturation parameters. The electronic structure of the interloping levels is discussed in terms of these studies. Line-widths generally decrease with increasing total angular momentum and the J=7 resonances are extremely narrow with Lorentzian widths ranging from <1 MHz up to 157 MHz. The strongest resonances are found to have cross-sections of ∼10-12 cm2 and photoionization can be saturated with powers available from cw diode lasers

AbstractAbstract
[en] The mass and its inherent connection with the nuclear binding energy is a unique property of a nuclide. Thus, precise mass values are important for a variety of applications, ranging from nuclear-structure studies like the investigation of shell closures, test of nuclear mass models and mass formulas, to tests of the weak interaction and of the Standard Model. A relative precision from 10-5 down to 10-8 is necessary for radionuclides, which most often have half-lives well below 1s. Substantial progress in Penning trap mass spectrometry has made this method a prime choice for precision measurements on rare isotopes. The technique has the potential to provide high accuracy and sensitivity even for very short-lived nuclides. Furthermore, ion traps can be used and offer advantages for precision decay studies. With MATS at FAIR we plan to apply both techniques to very short-lived radionuclides: High-precision mass measurements and in-trap conversion electron and alpha spectroscopy. The experimental setup of MATS is a unique combination of an electron beam ion trap for charge breeding, ion traps for beam preparation as well as decay studies, and a high precision Penning trap system for mass measurements. The proposed setup and the planned experimental program will be presented. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A new LabVIEW-based control system for the ISOLTRAP facility at ISOLDE/CERN has been implemented by using the Control System (CS) framework which has been developed by DVEE/GSI during the last two years. CS is an object-oriented, multi-threaded, event-driven framework with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) functionality. It allows one to implement distributed control systems by adding experiment specific add-ons. This paper gives an overview on the CS framework, describes the requirements for ISOLTRAP and reports on the implementation of the new control system
