[en] Among the problems of protecting the environment from radioactive contamination, the reduction of radioactive releases by improving monitoring, decontamination, and burial methods is one of the most important. Natural sorbents are gaining increased significance for solving this problem. Among these, zeolites deserve special attention since they have sufficient sorptive capacity, are highly radiation resistant, are widely distributed exhibit selectivity and are inexpensive. In the present work we determine experimentally the sorptive characteristics of clinoptilolite as a function of various factors and demonstrate that clinoptilolite is capable of sorbing Ce(IV) over a wide pH range. [en] Preventing the formation of the pyrochlore phase in the synthesis of PZN-PT powders requires controlling calcination parameters such as temperature, soaking time and atmosphere. These parameters were examined extensively to determine the time and temperature at which the perovskite phase is the majority phase, as well as the atmosphere that facilitates the formation of this phase. A maximum of 74% of perovskite phase was obtained under the following conditions: 1000°C, 4h in nitrogen atmosphere. In this work, we studied the influence of these parameters, which were optimized, on the formation the perovskite phase in PZN-10PT powders synthesized by the conventional solid state method. [en] A detailed discussion of high strain-rate tensile testing is presented. A comparative analysis of different ways to measure stress and strain is made. The experimental stress-strain curves have been suitably interpreted to distinguish between the real behaviour of the material and the influence of the testing methodology itself. A special two sections flat specimen design was performed through FEA computer modelling. The mechanical properties as function of strain rate were experimentally obtained and the measurement system limitations were evaluated. The strain rate material law was simulated and a good correlation between experimental and simulated engineering stress-strain curves was reached. (Author) 4 refs
[en] La-modified PbTiO3-based ceramics (PLT) are the subject of many studies in term of piezoelectric and pyroelectric applications, but the processing of PLT to optimize their transparency and electro-optical properties has not been studied in detail. Ferroelectric (Pb1-xLax)TiO3 (PLT) ceramics, with 0.18 = x = 0.23, were produced by a solid state reaction and uniaxially hot pressing for 3h at a temperature of 1220 degree centigrade, and a pressure of ∼6,0 MPa. High density, translucent reddish color and high dc conductivity were observed for all compositions. Nevertheless appropriate thermal treatments in an O2 atmosphere, after hot pressing, led to ceramics with good properties for dielectric, optical and electro-optical studies. The heat-treated samples revealed a homogeneous microstructure, absence of second phases, increased of the transmittance in the visible and infrared range and reduced dc conductivity. These features allowed the electro-optical coefficient of the (Pb,La)TiO3 system to be calculated. (Author) 24 refs.
[en] In this work, the effect of calcium concentration in wastewater on the polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAO) is investigated as well as its influence in PAO metabolism, specifically in the YPO4 (ratio between phosphorus release and acetic acid uptake). For this study a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) anaerobic-aerobic was used, in which the PAO enriched biomass was exposed to different calcium concentrations in the influent wastewater. The results indicate that until a given calcium level in the influent wastewater (35 mg Ca/l) the metabolism is not affect, but higher calcium concentrations lead to significant YPO4 decline.
