[en] The object of this paper is to present the plans under consideration for the final destination of solid radioactive wastes. 1) It is first of all necessary to provide in each centre an organised temporary storage dump. Several types of temporary dumps are suitable and can coexist in the same area; on the ground, in buildings; in basements. 2) Definitive storage. To accomplish a definitive storage arrangement it is necessary, as a function of the activity and the conditioning of the wastes, to define: - the site and the means of transport considered both inside and outside nuclear centres. The solution adopted depends on the above imperatives, and plans for definitive storage on the ground, under ground and in the sea are examined successively. Economic considerations play a large part in the decision reached. (author)

La presente communication a pour objet les solutions envisagees pour une destination finale des dechets radioactifs solide. 1) Il est tout d'abord necessaire de prevoir, dans chaque centre, un stockage provisoire organise. Plusieurs types de stockage previsoire peuvent convenir et coexister sur une meme aire; stockage sur le sol; stockage en batiment; stockage en sous-sol. 2) Stockage definitif. La realisation d'un stockage definitif rend necessaire, en fonction de l'activite et du conditionnement des dechets, la definition: - du site et des modes de transports envisages a l'interieur et a l'exterieur des Centres Nucleaires. Le choix des solutions decoule des imperatifs ci-dessus et on examine successivement le stockage definitif, - sur le sol; dans le sous-sol; en mer. [en] This paper deals with solutions for the problem of final disposal of solid radioactive waste. I. It is first essential to organize a proper system of temporary storage. II. Final Storage In order to organize final storage, it is necessary to fix, according to the activity and form of the waste, the site and the modes of transport to be used within and outside the nuclear centre. The choice of solutions follows from the foregoing essentials. The paper then considers, in turn, final storage, on the ground, in the sub-soil and in the sea. Economic considerations are an important factor in determining the choice of solution. (author)

[en] The ultimate disposal of radioactive wastes sets an important problem which has been partly solved. France has temporarily adopted the following method: 1) Volume reduction, 2) Fixation of the activity in non leakable solids standing all temporarily or ultimate kinds of storing. According to those two basic principles the authors have presented: - a decontamination plant allowing maximum recovery of materials, - the plans of an installation devised for carrying out radioactive waste volume reduction and conditioning. Both of them are being built at Saclay. (author)

La France a adopte, comme solution d'attente, le processus ci-dessous: 1) Reduction des volumes, 2) Confinement de l'activite dans des solides non lechables et pouvant resister a tous modes de stockage provisoire ou definitif. A partir des idees directrices, MM. [en] I. The handling and transport of radioactive wastes involves the danger of irradiation and contamination. It is indispensable: - to lay down a special set of rules governing the removal and transport of wastes within centres or from one centre to another; - to give charge of this transportation to a group containing teams of specialists. The organisation, equipment and output of these teams is being examined. II. Certain materials are particularly dangerous to transport, and for these special vehicles and fixed installations are necessary. This is the case especially for the evacuation of very active liquids. A transport vehicle is described, consisting of a trailer tractor and a recipient holding 500 litres of liquid of which the activity can reach 1000 C/l; the decanting operation, the route to be followed by the vehicle, and the precautions taken are also described. [en] I. The handling and transport of radioactive waste involves the risk of irradiation and contamination. It is necessary to draw up special regulations governing the removal and transport of waste within the centres or from one centre to another, and to entrust transport to a group in charge of specialized teams. The organization, equipment and efficiency of such teams is then considered. II. Certain types of transport operation are particularly dangerous and require special transport units and fixed installations. This applies, in particular, to the disposal of highly radioactive liquids. A description is given of a composite transport unit, consisting of a towing vehicle, semi-trailer and tank holding 500 l of liquid with an activity of up to 1,000 c/l. The drawing-off of the liquid waste, routing of the transport unit and precautions to be taken are discussed. (author)

[en] Immediate detection of atmospheric contamination by plutonium is necessary for warning of operators. A precise estimate of the level of this contamination is also necessary in order to give the Medical Section proper information. Experiments have been carried out at CEN-FAR using atmospheric contamination by plutonium monitors. [en] Various problems about measurement of atmospheric contamination by plutonium in laboratories are considered. In particular are studied sampling methods, continuous measurement for alarm, criteria used for fixation of the concentrations to be measured, sensitivity of apparatus and effects of natural atmospheric contamination. The means actually available for measurement of contamination and their limits of use are briefly analysed. (authors)

[en] A device for aerosol production and entrainment has been designed and built at the Physics Laboratory of the Radiation Protection Section of the Nuclear Studies Centre in Fontenay-aux-Roses for use in experiments with and calibration of various instruments for monitoring atmospheric contamination by radioactive aerosols. The paper describes the device for aerosol production and diffusion and refers to a number of experiments which illustrate its use. The unit consists of an aerosol generator which disperses inside a containment aerosols produced by drying a saline solution in dry air. The aerosols in the homogenization container have a definite and reproducible particle size. The concentration of natural daughter products of radon can be varied within certain limits. The first checks of aerosol particle size were made with a cascade impactor. Testing with a slit impactor can be used for checking on the collection of plutonium aerosols, while various other instruments with a mobile filter were tested with beta-emitting aerosols. The testing device can also be used for studying the distribution of aerosols on fixed filters and for investigating deposits in pipelines and sampling containers. (author)

Dans le but d'effectuer des expérimentations et des étalonnages de divers appareils destinés au contrôle de la contamination de l'air par des aérosols radioactifs, un dispositif de production et d'entraînement d'aérosols a été réalisé et expérimenté au laboratoire de physique de la Section de protection contre les radiations au Centre d'études nucléaires de Fontenay-aux-Roses. Le mémoire a pour objet de décrire d'une part le dispositif de production et de diffusion des aérosols et, d'autre part, certaines expérimentations qui ont été effectuées avec cet apareillage. Celui-ci est constitué par un générateur d'aérosols qui disperse dans une gaine de conditionnement des aérosols produits par dessiccation d'une solution saline dans de l'air sec. Les aérosols au sein de la gaine d'homogénéisation présentent une granulométrie définie et reproductible. Il est également possible de faire varier dans certaines limites la concentration en produits de filiation naturels du radon. Les premiers contrôles de la granulométrie des aérosols ont été réalisés en utilisant un impacteur en «cascades». L'essai d'un impacteur â fente a permis de contrôler la collecte des aérosols de plutonium, alors que divers autres appareils â filtre mobile ont été essayés avec des aérosols émetteurs β. Le dispositif d'essai permet encore d'étudier la répartitior des aérosols sur filtres fixes et peut aussi être utilisé pour l'étude des dépôts dans les canalisations et gaines de prélèvement.
