AbstractAbstract
[en] There have been many studies to determine the level of contamination in generator produced 99m-Tc. Such studies are required so that reasonably accurate dose calculations, which include all radiations from a sample, can be made. We have conducted a set of experiments designed to establish the origin of the as yet unassigned 322 keV gamma-ray often observed as the major contaminant in generator-produced 99m-Tc eluant fractions: Classical radiochemical milking of daughter from parent + grandparent was employed along with high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy. These experiments, in which energy and half-life were determined, indicate that the 322 keV gamma-ray is indeed the result of beta-decay of 99m-Tc. Our results do not preclude other beta or gamma decays from this parent

AbstractAbstract
[en] Many enzymes, proteins, and large molecules bind a variety of inorganic ions. The replacement of a specific metal ion with another element can disrupt the biodistribution and biochemistry of the host molecule. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a known oncofetal antigen. The authors have demonstrated that the substitution of Cu or Pb on AFP inhibits the transplacental migration of AFP and may lead to fetal demise. It is evident that in labeling with a radiotracer in order to observe the true distribution of a molecule, one must select a radioisotope of an element which is naturally bound to the host molecule. It has been demonstrated that AFP binds Zn in vivo. Thus, substituting 65Zn for natural Zn produces an intrinsic label for AFP. The authors discuss the methodology for stripping and labeling of AFP with 65Zn. The biodistribution of labeled AFP is compared with that of 65Zn2+ in healthy and diseased (hepatoma) animals

AbstractAbstract
[en] Overman and Clark began filling the need for the formal education of nuclear scientists versed in chemistry, at the Oak Ridge Institute. In 1947 Clark began the program at Rensselaer that has continued through to today. The evolution of course content, the laboratory programs and complementary course work in other disciplines will be discussed. Educational and logistical concerns will be addressed. The prospects for continuation of both theory and laboratory programs, the student interest and financial support for course development and equipment needs are concerns that will be presented
