[en] The use of sulphur and lead isotopes as isotopic tracers in the study of ore deposits containing these elements is reviewed. A discussion of the general theory, including abundance and fractionation of sulphur isotopes, single-stage leads, and anomalous leads (two-stage) is given. Attention is paid to sulphur isotopes enclosed in deposits which are located in marine host rocks and in rocks of continental or near-continental origin, as well as in deposits of the conglomerate-U(-Au) type. The lead isotope content of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits and carbonate-hosted lead-zinc deposits is discussed

[en] Nearly 30 volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits, interpreted as coeval with their host rocks, are distributed throughout the circum-Kisseynew volcanic belt. Lead isotopic abundances in a representative number of these deposits are, apart from 204-error, relatively homogeneous in composition and model lead ages determined from these isotopic ratios fall, for the most part, between 1700 and 1900 Ma

[en] The luminescence emitted when crystalline H2O ice at 88K is irradiated with pulsed electrons has been subdivided into the following three spectral bands at wavelengths, lambda, and photon yields, G/sub p/, by using the measured dependence of emission intensity on accumulated dose. Band I: lambda = 280-340 nm, G/sub p/ = 2 X 10-7 photons/100 eV. Band II: lambda = 320-600 nm, G/sub p/ = 1 X 10-5 photons/100 eV initially. Band III: lambda = 500-600 nm, G/sub p/ = 1 X 10-5 photons/100 eV

AbstractAbstract
[en] Radiation chemistry techniques may be used to solve research problems in other fields of chemistry and biology particularly when free radicals, excited states or reduction-oxidation reactions are involved. Using pulse radiolysis, absolute kinetic rate constants can be measured. The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering is an organization jointly funded by universities, ANSTO and CSIRO. Over the past several years it has provided fares, accommodation and specialized supplementary equipment to enable PhD students and post doctoral fellows to make use of the unique electron beam and gamma irradiation facilities at the Lucas Heights Research Laboratories. It also arranges biennial conferences at which this work is presented and discussed. This talk will discuss the contribution made to the education of students in the undergraduate final year and in physical, metal-organic, organic, polymer and enzyme chemistry research

[en] Spent fuel elements discharged from the DIDO-type research reactor, HIFAR, are allowed to cool for a few weeks and then cropped to remove excess metal. The elements are placed in a non-critical assembly in the bottom of an irradiated pond. Such a fuel element facility has been used for 15 years at the Australian Atomic Energy Commission's Research Establishment, Lucas Heights, in parallel with cobalt-60 facilities to carry out a range of irradiations involving such things as the sterilization of pharmaceuticals and medical products and of soils, polymerization and crosslinking of polymers and a wide range of radiation processing, radiation biology and radiation chemistry studies. In the years to come there will be an enormous supply of unprocessed fuel elements from power reactors. The technical feasibility of using these as a source for large scale radiation processes such as sewage treatment is assessed. Over the first few months during which the activity decays rapidly there is a need for frequent dosimetry and adjustments to dose delivered or to material flow rate. Possible ways of mitigating the effects of this major drawback are discussed. It is concluded that unprocessed fuel elements will not become a major source of radiation for processing and that electron accelerators appear to be the most satisfactory sources for large throughputs.
