[en] In transversal computer tomography apparatus, in which the positioning zone in which the patient can be positioned is larger than the scanning zone in which a body slice can be scanned, reconstruction errors are liable to occur. These errors are caused by incomplete irradiation of the body during examination. They become manifest not only as an incorrect image of the area not irradiated, but also have an adverse effect on the image of the other, completely irradiated areas. The invention enables reduction of these errors

AbstractAbstract
[en] The top quark is the heaviest elementary particle observed to date. Its large mass makes the top quark an ideal laboratory to test predictions of perturbation theory concerning heavy quark production at hadron colliders. The top quark is also a powerful probe for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. In addition, the top quark mass is a crucial parameter for scrutinizing the Standard Model in electroweak precision tests and for predicting the mass of the yet unobserved Higgs boson. Ten years after the discovery of the top quark at the Fermilab Tevatron top quark physics has entered an era where detailed measurements of top quark properties are undertaken. In this review article an introduction to the phenomenology of top quark production in hadron collisions is given, the lessons learned in Tevatron Run I are summarized, and first Run II results are discussed. A brief outlook to the possibilities of top quark research at the Large Hadron Collider, currently under construction at CERN, is included. (Orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The analysis of two photon physics at the e+e- storage ring PETRA is reviewed. Higher order QED processes e+e- → e+e-e+e-(e+e-μ+μ-) have been measured in good agreement with the QED calculations. The production of the f0 resonance has been investigated and the radiative width has been determined. The total cross section sigma(Q2,W) of the inelastic electron photon scattering has been studied in some detail. Evidence for the production of large Psub(T) jets in the reaction γγ → qanti q is reported and a first measurement of the photon structure function in deep inelastic eγ scattering is discussed. The measured values of absorption are fed to the circuit of the computer tomograph. By means of an arrangement of screens the detectors for the X-radiation can be irradiated in such manner that one detector area at a time is hit by the transmitted radiation and another area only be the scattered radiation. By subtraction of the partial output signals of both detector areas the error portion in the output signal caused by the scattered radiation is eliminated. (RW)

[en] The HERA-B experiment at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg is dedicated to measuring CP-violation in the decays of neutral B-mesons. The primary purpose of the experiment in the measurement of the CP-asymmetry in the decay channel B0 → J/ψKS0. In order to identify the B-mesons and to determine the time-dependent asymmetry, the decay length anti Δ anti l of the B-mesons must be measured to an accuracy of σΔl ≤ 500 μm. To achieve this aim, HERA-B has a vertex detector which is based on double-sided silicon strip detectors mounted in a Roman pot system. One important specification of the vertex detector is to allow independent tracking with an efficiency above 95%. Therefore, it is required to select hits on the strip detectors with an efficiency above 99% and optimize the suppression of noise. This thesis describes a detailed investigation of the behaviour of the silicon strip detectors used in the vertex detector. The first part presents measurements performed in the laboratory using a tunable infrared dye laser to simulate the passage of charged particles through the detector. This includes measurements of the charge division between adjacent readout strips and mapping of the detector depletion. The results of the measurements agree excellently with the predictions from a detailed model calculation carried out in this thesis. The second part of the thesis the analysis of data recorded with the HERA-B vertex detector during the commissioning run of spring 1999. The analysis focusses on the investigation of cluster shapes and cluster sizes. In particular, the dependence of these distributions from the selection cuts is analyzed. Additionally, the differences between the two detector designs used, p-spray and p-stop detectors with intermediate strip or without respectively, are worked out. The measured distributions agree very well with the predictions from a model calculation taking all relevant detector parameters into account. The results of the data analysis - from the laser as well as from the HERA-B experiment - confirm the expectations from the design and characterize the silicon strip detectors as very well suited for application within HERA-B. [en] Apart from calculating the strength of pipeline components planning and design are the most important tasks on the areas of apparatus manufacturing, fluid engineering, process engineering and thermal engineering. It is therefore necessary that the flow diagrams of a plant are clearly understandable and in accordance with the technical rules even in the early stages of planning. This book concentrates on steel pipeline which are not laid underground but of the type used mostly in industrial applications. The pictures and equations provided can be used for the design of pipelines, tables and diagrams are given to facilitate estimation of elasticity, pipeline pressure losses and insulating thicknesses.
