AbstractAbstract
[en] This article primarily reviews the most important developments--the milestones--in the evolution of Finnish ore dressing practice. The secondary purpose is to try to relate these developments to the common knowledge and practice of the time. In most cases, the Finnish ore deposits available for processing have been small and low grade. The few big deposits located have seldom proved rich but almost always risky; furthermore there were no really comparable ores worked in other countries to serve as models. Innovation has thus been a necessity as much as a virtue

[en] This paper describes a new liner designed for a copper ore crusher in Yugoslavia. The experience gained over the past ten years of operation at the Bor copper mines has shown that correct selection of wear material for crusher liners is critical to successful plant performance. With the new wear resistant liners, the crusher development program has increased the concentrator throughput from 8.0 to 9.6 million tons/year. The ultimate goal of the project is to identify the proper liner material that will extend liner life, reduce cyclic stress on major crusher components, and simplify crusher control and adjustment. This paper describes the various liners materials and the mechanisms of wear

[en] The use of sophisticated tracking and communications to manage the loading and haulage system is not confined to open cut mines. Both Modular Mining and El-Equip have worked on haulage systems for De Beers underground diamond mines, while El-Equip is presently providing uranium miner Cameco Corp. with a management and automation communications ''platform''. Kyran Casteel reports on this and the latest news on GPS-based surface systems

[en] Acid mine drainage often results from the oxidation sulfide minerals to form sulfuric acid. As a consequence, high concentrations of metals in the both the suspended and dissolved state result from the low pH water. This paper discusses several of the more common treatment methods for acid mine drainage including the use of chemical precipitation agents, pH correction agents, filtration methods, and biodegradation methods. Advanced treatment technologies are also briefly described and include microfiltration, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and electrodialysis

[en] The design of autogeneous grinding mills is difficult because of the variability of their grinding media; when steel balls or rods are used as in SAG or non-autogenous machines, calculations can be much more reliable because--obviously--the characteristics of the media are constant, or predictable. But when the grinding medium and the feed material are one and the same thing, the variations in the physical characteristics of the feed multiply the design problems, especially in the case of autogenous primary mills. Now, however, researchers from Outokumpu, Finland, working backwards after years of studying full scale autogenous production mills, are developing a special laboratory method to test the suitability of ores for Outogenius comminution, Outokumpu's own autogenous grinding process. This paper discusses the results of these new grinding machines which use ores to grind ores. The specifications of the machinery are provided along with the performance on various types of ores

[en] Radical innovations in drill and blast drifting technology to boost drill power and penetration rates are unlikely in the near future. Instead, the development efforts of the major manufacturers over the next few years will be concentrated on undramatic but valuable improvements in the three main component areas--drill steels and bits, drifters, and control and monitoring systems--and the matching and coordination of all three to improve the effectiveness of the complete drill system. In this feature the author surveys recent trends and developments in mine drifting
