AbstractAbstract
[en] This address to the Fuel Luncheon Club is concerned with future energy supply and demand and the difficulty of making energy policy decisions because of the economic uncertainties affecting them. The risks associated with nuclear power and public understanding of them are discussed and it is suggested that a more real and alarming risk is that of military conflict as a result of competition for energy resources. One way to lessen the potential conflict is the economical use of all available resources using all the possibilities and facing the risks in their proper perspective. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The worldwide energy scene, past, present and future is summarised and assessed. The section on nuclear power outlines the situation in the west, the eastern block and the less developed countries. In the west, particularly the United States, the nuclear industry is suffering from a crisis in public confidence. The eastern block nuclear power programme, led by the USSR, is proceeding steadily. The British 300 MWe Magnox station is considered to be appropriate for developing countries rather than large PWRs. Other energy sources considered are coal, gas, and renewable energy sources (solar, geothermal, biomass). Energy conservation, energy resources and policy are discussed. The last section, on solving the energy equation, includes the energy-lethargy diagram. (U.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this inaugural address of the newly-formed Energy Industries Club, the help, support and informational facilities provided by the Institute of Energy to managers and technical specialists of the industry, were considered. Problems in the separate industries, relevant to the various fuel sources, are discussed and the lessons which can be learned from the development of the nuclear industry, are examined. The timing of oil production from coal and of fast reactor power generation is felt to depend not so much on technological progress but upon economic and political factors. (U.K.)
