AbstractAbstract
[en] A TRW experimental program to carry out the observation of oscillation to short wavelengths in a high efficiency system is presented here. A tapered wiggler experimentation is being performed on the Stanford Superconducting Accelerator (SCA). The wiggler to be used for this experiment is a modified version of the wiggler used in the TRW amplifier FEL experiments at EG and G [extended length and prebunching]. The wiggler has asub(w) = .7, lambdasub(w) = 3.54 cm and an easily changed taper rate. Enhancements have increased the length to 5 m and add a prebunching section (approximately 0.5 m) followed by a magnet dispersion section (''drift''). The multicomponent wiggler is optimized by varying the effective length of the magnetic drift section. This paper describes the facility and experimental apparatus to be used in the experiment. The first section describes the linac. This is followed by a discussion fo the beamline, the wiggler, the optical cavity, and finally the diagnostics

AbstractAbstract
[en] The basic physics of electron storage rings and some limitations are discussed. For high beam current density and short damping times, the main limitation comes from the Touschek effect. However, peak currents of a few hundred amperes per bunch can be expected at a beam energy of 1 GeV, and more than one bunch should be filled in order to maximize total FEL power

AbstractAbstract
[en] The purpose of this paper is to concentrate on the properties of high-energy electron linear accelerators for use in free-electron lasers operating principally in the Compton regime. To fix our focus somewhat, we shall consider electron energies in the 20- to 200-MeV range and consider requirements for high-power free-electron lasers operating in the 0.5- to 10-μm range. Preliminary remarks are made on high-power free-electron laser amplifiers and oscillators and some desirable characteristics of the linacs that deliver electron beams for these devices. Both the high peak-current requirements of the amplifier and the high pulse-repetition frequency requirements of the oscillator can be met by present-day linac technology, although not necessarily by the same machine. In this papers second and third section, the technology of two rather different types of linear accelerators, the rf linac and the induction linac, is reviewed. In conclusion, applications to the Free Electron Lasers are stated

AbstractAbstract
[en] Storage rings dedicated to free electron laser (F.E.L.) sources must show good beam performances in order to obtain high gains. In particular bunch length, energy spread, beam intensity and transverse emittance have to satisfy special requirements. To give a better feeling on storage ring problems we intend here to briefly overview twenty years of experience obtained with small and medium energy storage rings which were initially built as high energy physics facilities. The limiting effects and possible means to remedy the inconveniences will be discussed
