AbstractAbstract
[en] Olfactory dysfunctions have multiple causes, including post-viral disorders, chronic sinusitis, trauma, toxins and neurodegenerative diseases. Diagnostically, tests with sniffinʼ sticks, taste tests and chemosensory threshold testing are available. The anatomical correlates are more difficult to identify. The study found that the olfactory bulb is suitable as a simple measure in MRI.

Olfaktorische Dysfunktionen haben vielfältige Ursachen, darunter postvirale Störungen, chronische Sinusitiden, Traumata, Toxine und neurodegenerative Erkrankungen. Diagnostisch stehen Tests mit Sniffinʼ Sticks, Geschmacksprüfungen und chemosensorische Grenzwertüberprüfungen zur Verfügung. Die anatomischen Korrelate sind schwerer zu identifizieren. Die Studie ergab, dass sich der Bulbus olfactorius in der MRT als einfache Messgröße eignet.Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] Machadi Joseph disease (MJD/SCA3) is the most common spinocerebellar ataxia disorder worldwide. Pathological studies have shown that patients with MJD/SCA3 have fewer melanin-containing dopaminergic neurons in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra (SN). The purpose of this study was to quantify the damage in the SN in these patients in vivo using neuromelanin-sensitive MRI images.

Die Machadi-Joseph-Krankheit (MJD/SCA3) ist weltweit die häufigste spinozerebelläre Ataxieerkrankung. Pathologische Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass bei Patienten mit MJD/SCA3 weniger melaninhaltige dopaminerge Neuronen in der Pars compacta der Substantia nigra (SN) vorhanden sind. [en] Conventional radiographs have been shown suitable to survey rheumatic lesions and document them in a standardized form. This technique, however, is limited to advanced stages of the disease with bone and joint destruction. In early arthritis, the quantification of inflammatory activity and recently also healing processes are better documented with MRI or ultrasound. As a result, finding low-grade abnormalities and tissue repair is gaining increasing importance in diagnostic imaging. (orig.)
