AbstractAbstract
[en] The aim of the project was to determine the properties (energy level scheme, branching ratios, mean lifetimes, spins and parities) of excited states in 55Mn and to eliminate some of the uncertainties for those levels where these properties are not uniquely known. The excitation of states in 55Mn was accomplished by using the 52Cr (α, pγ)55Mn reaction at Eα = 12 MeV. The target used during the experiment consisted of natural chromium metal of thickness 307 μg/cm2 evaporated on a 118 μg/cm2 selfsupporting carbon backing. The rather thick carbon backing ensured that none of the recoiling 55Mn ions escaped into the vacuum of the target chamber, thus increasing the long lifetime limit for the determination of the mean lifetimes of levels by the Doppler shift attenuation method. The thickness of the chromium and carbon layers of the target were determined by Rutherford scattering and the absorption of α-particles. 26 figs., 73 refs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The dynamic response of an adsorption column for a step change in the inlet concentration was investigated for three commercially available activated carbons namely Le Carbone G 210 AS, Norit RB1 and Norit RB3. n-Octane, n-nonane, n-decane, n-undecane, perfluoromethylcyclohexane and toluene were used as adsorbates to analyse breakthrough curves. Results indicate that the adsorption equilibrium of n-alkanes, perfluoromethylcyclohexane and toluene on Le Carbone G 210 AS activated carbon can be adequately described by the Langmuir isotherm. In the velocity region investigated there was a linear relationship between the linear velocity of the inert carrier gas and the mass transfer coefficient. Desorption breakthrough curves were modelled by the Walter desorption equation and good correlation was achieved for the desorption of n-alkanes from Le Carbone and Norit carbons. The constant separation factor obtained for desorption curves confirmed the highly non linear shape of the equilibruim curve for these systems. Results of the investigation indicate that the mass transfer rate is fastest in the case of Norit RB1 activated carbon because the particle size is the smallest and is slowest for Norit RB3. Norit RB1 or Le Carbone G 210 AS activated carbon are recommended as adsorbent for the removal of oil vapour from hydrogen gas. 84 refs., 162 figs., 137 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Occupational health is growing in South Africa because of the industrial growth in the country. The rate of development in occupational health should stimulate industrial growth. This is the first book about this subject in Afrikaans and should fill the gap and result in better working conditions and quality of life. The book consists of 21 chapters of which only 2 chapters were considered relevant to INIS
