AbstractAbstract
[en] Large doses of light are given to newborns during phototherapy for hyperbilirubinemia. Tissues containing concentrations of bilirubin almost in the mM range may be subjected to irradiation. Therefore it is of interest to study cellular effects of light and bilirubin on cells. In order to select the optimal wavelength, possible detrimental effects of light on cells must be taken into consideration among a number of other factors. In this study cellular effects of selected wavelengths of blue-green light are compared. It is not clear whether cullular damage occurs in vivo during phototherapy of newborns. Since a possibility exists that some adverse effects are caused by light, one should choose wavelengths where these effects are minimal without loosing therapeutic efficiency. Todays knowledge of the photochemical mechanisms of phototherapy, indicates that short waved light with wavelengths below 450 nm has a low therapeutic effect. The data in this paper indicate that the cellular damage is most severe at short wavelengths, and these should be reduced to a minimum in the spectra of phototherapy lamps. Further studies of possible side effects of phototherapy should be made. 64 refs., 34 figs., 1 tab

AbstractAbstract
[en] Tables are presented giving the Sr 90 content in human bone from 212 subjects who diedin 1975 and 1976. These are summarised in age groups and presented with corresponding figures for the years from 1956 on wards. The activity per gram of calcium for infants from 6 months to 2years is compared with the activity in milk for each year from 1956. This information is also presented on histograms. The content of Sr 90 and Cs 137 in cheese samples from a number of dairies spread over the whole country is also given and summarised by district for each year from 1959. The Sr 90 content in wheat and barley from granaries in several districts are given and compared with wheat samples from Sweden. (JIW)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The iodine content in cheese from 14 different dairies in Norway has been determined by means of neutron activation analysis combined with iodine separation by retention on Dowex 2-X8 anion exchanger. The material embraces 4 specimens of Norvegia, 7 specimens of G-35 Gudbrandsdalsost, 2 specimens of Floetemysost, and 1 specimen of Hvit Geitost. The results show no significant differences in the iodine content between cheeses from coastal versus inland dairies. Neither is there any observed significant difference in the iodine content when comparing cheese from southern and northern Norway. The analysis shows that two of the most commonly eaten cheeses in Norway, namely G-35 and Norvegia, represent significant sources contributing to the daily iodine need of the population. However, the G-35 cheese appears to contain appreciably more iodine than Norvegia. This fact relates to the total iodine in milk being variably fixed to the various protein fractions of the milk, and their use in cheese manufacturing. The results indicate that especially Floetemysost and G-35, but also Norvegia, make a significant contribution to satisfying the population's iodine needs, and thereby to reducing the uptake of I131 in the thyroid. AbstractAbstract
[en] Iodine has been determined in Norwegian cheese by combination of neutron activation and subsequent separation of radioiodine (128I) by selective retention on Dowex 2-X8 anion exchange resin. Iodine may be detected down to 5ng in terms of absolute amounts. In terms of concentration the detection limit was 10ppb. Results showed a precision of 5 percent at a concentration level of 1ppm. AbstractAbstract
[en] This report deals with the calibration of the Norwegian X-ray standard (NPL secondary standard) at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, Paris (BIPM). The findings during this calibration are compared with an earlier calibration performed at the National Physical Laboratory, UK (NPL). The new calibration has changed the X-ray standard by a maximum of 0.8%. The estimated uncertainty in the exposure calibration factor given by the Norwegian SSDL is 0.45%
