AbstractAbstract
[en] Rotating superfluid 3He-B is found to possess a new contribution to the NMR frequency shift, which changes sign on reversal of either the angular velocity of rotation or the magnetic field. For p = 29.3 bars this gyromagnetic effect shows a discontinuity in magnitude at the first-order phase-transition temperature T/T/sub c/ = 0.6, at which a change in the vortex core structure takes place. These observations support the conclusion that the vortex core possesses a spontaneous intrinsic magnetization

AbstractAbstract
[en] The spin dynamics of weakly interacting, spin-polarized quantum gases are discussed in terms of a quasiparticle picture of these systems. Quantum mechanical exchange between identical particles introduces ''molecular'' magnetic fields which give rise to the precession of the spin current; this in turn leads to coherent oscillations of the magnetization. The theory is used to discuss magnetic resonance experiments in spin-polarized atomic hydrogen

AbstractAbstract
[en] Exact results for the slip length and the surface impedance of a superfluid Fermi liquid are reported for the case of diffuse boundary scattering and compared with previous approximate results based on variational methods. We also derive upper and lower bounds on the slip length for a general class of scattering laws, including the case of Andreev reflection due to suppression of the order parameter near the walls

AbstractAbstract
[en] Solutions to the spin dynamics equations for the B phase of helium-3 are found which describe the periodic motions of the magnetization in a constant magnetic field of arbitrary strength. The stability of the solutions found is investigated, and the effect exerted by dissipation on them is considered

AbstractAbstract
[en] The absorption coefficient for first sound has been measured below 0.9 0K at a frequency of 29.8 MHz in 3He--4He solutions with molar concentrations 0.5 and 0.05% 3He at constant densities of 0.153, 0.159, 0.165 and 0.170 g cm-3. Analysis of the experimental results showed that absorption in a 0.5% 3He mixture at all densities studied is produced by the viscosity of 3He and by scattering by thermal phonons, whose mean free path is limited by the 3He impurities. Absorption in a solution containing 0.05% 3He is qualitatively similar to that in pure 4He, indicating that for not too high densities the initial part of the phonon spectrum still shows anomalous dispersion on addition of 3He impurities. The transverse relaxation time for phonons in 4He at a pressure of 1.1 atm was determined, as was the relaxation time for phonons on interaction with 3He impurities

AbstractAbstract
[en] A phenomenological description of coupled, layered helium films, which includes damping, is formulated and applied to analysis of the recent data of Ellis and Hallock. This application requires estimating the interfilm coupling for two quite different situations: for low 3He coverage, where the 3He behaves like a d = 2 ideal gas and for high 3He coverage, where 3He is a self-bound incompressible liquid. Only one of the two modes that coupled, layered films are able to support is observed. It is the weakly damped, third-sound mode. The second mode, involving motion of the 3He, is overdamped, ωtau3approx. =10-3, at both low and high 3He concentration

AbstractAbstract
[en] The mutual friction between 3He and 4He II below 150 mK has been studied. Empirical relations for the adiabatic and the nonadiabatic flow properties of 3He moving through 4He have been determined using a dilution refrigerator with a single mixing chamber. The validity of the relations is verified by osmotic-pressure measurements and by measuring the properties of a double-mixing-chamber system. It is shown that superleak shunts have a strong effect on the flow characteristics. From the nonadiabatic flow properties an expression is derived for the mutual-friction-force density between 3He and 4He II. This has a strong resemblance to the Gorter-Mellink mutual-friction-force density between the normal and the superfluid components in pure 4He II. It is speculated that the 3He flow in our systems generates a 4He vortex tangle, which leads to the observed mutual friction between 3He and 4He and also to a strong clamping of the 4He to the walls

AbstractAbstract
[en] Precise measurements of the velocity of 5-MHz longitudinal sound in liquid 3He have been made over a broad range of temperatures (0.3 to 30 mK) and pressure (0.3 to 34 bars). The zero-temperature asymptotic velocity in the B-phase superfluid is measured and found to be the same as the hydrodynamic value in the normal Fermi liquid. The pressure dependence of F2/sup s/, the second symmetric Landau parameter for the Fermi liquid, is deduced

AbstractAbstract
[en] The shape of the line of ultrasonic absorption due to the various components of the real squashing mode in textures in 3He-B is analyzed. The additional splitting of the absorption line for the M = 0 component of the real squashing mode in a magnetic field is explained. The absence of such a splitting for the lines with M = +- 1, +- 2 in a planar geometry is also explained. Structural features in the lines of ultrasonic absorption by various components of the real squashing mode in a rotating cylindrical vessel holding 3He-B are discussed
