AbstractAbstract
[en] This progress report is mainly devoted to the scientific activity of the LLB or carried out in collaboration with external laboratories. The activity of the LLB is split in several chapters dealing with: magnetism, superconductivity, structures (including lattice dynamics), phase transitions, C60, quasi-crystal systems, disordered systems (amorphous, liquids, crystal solid solutions), biology, soft matter (polymers and colloids), physical metallurgy and materials science. Neutron scattering is the main tool used in all these topics but other techniques are also used such as: polarized neutron reflectivity, cold neutrons diffraction, NMR, synchrotron radiation etc. (J.S.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A methodology for obtaining high resolution crystal structure potential distribution from electron microscope images of defects is presented. The technique is based on the inversion multislice procedure when extended to non-periodic wavefields. The sensitivity of the method to the defect model and position in the crystal is examined briefly. This investigation suggests that if a defect similar to the ones modelled here actually exists and is sufficiently immobile, then it could be detected in HRTEM images and its structure could be deduced by the methods of wavefield retrieval and inversion as presented here. Further the recovered structure should enable the configuration of the object to be distinguished from amongst feasible contenders. A major shortcoming of this study is that it requires a good estimate of the crystal thickness and of the position of the defect; also the effects of diffuse-diffuse couplings between diffuse-scattered beams that would be present in defects that are less localised than that modelled here, and are extended in the direction of the electron beam, may need to be considered in future investigations. AbstractAbstract
[en] This is the final report of a one-year, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). We investigated design concepts of neutron scattering capabilities for structural biology at spallation sources. This included the analysis of design parameters for protein crystallography as well as membrane diffraction instruments. These instruments are designed to be general user facilities and will be used by scientists from industry, universities, and other national laboratories

AbstractAbstract
[en] The inelastic slow neutron scattering of YBa2Cu3Ox compounds was investigated for superconduction (x = 6.95) and non-superconduction (x = 6.4) condition. The generalized function of density of states was received. The changes in vibration spectra depending on oxygen concentration were analyzed. Comparison with results have been received earlier was carried out. High frequency vibration at energy ε ≅ 176 MeV the nature of which is not clear was found

AbstractAbstract
[en] The depth resolution of heavy-ion elastic recoil detection analysis was examined for Al and Co thin films ranging in thickness from 100 to 400 nm. Measurements were performed with 154 MeV Au ions as the incident beam, and recoils were detected using a gas ionisation detector. Energy spectra were extracted for the Al and Co recoils and the depth resolution determined as a function of film thickness from the width of the high- and low- energy edges. These results were compared with theoretical estimates calculated using the computer program DEPTH. (authors)
